UNESCO World Cultural Heritage

The Highlights of this tour

Salzburg
Developed over the period from the Middle Ages to the 19th century when it was a city-state ruled by a prince-archbishop, Salzburg has managed to preserve an extraordinarily rich urban fabric. During centuries, the archbishops employed famous artists and architects, so that the old part of Salzburg became a unique city, dominated by the fortress Hohensalzburg. Since 1996 it is listed as Cultural World Heritage of the UNESCO.

Munich
The Bavarian capital attracts its visitors with a huge amount of historic buildings, churches, gardens and palaces. Although not mentioned in the UNESCO list, we dedicate Munich one day of our trip. In a short stop-over, you get a first impression and can relax while enjoying the typical Bavarian food and beverage before you discover the next city of World Heritage.

Bamberg
Spread over seven hills and situated in the heart of the Franconian cultural landscape is Bamberg, former centre of episcopal and imperial power. It is the river Regnitz with its many watercourses and bridges that shapes the face of the town and emphasises the romantic atmosphere that the visitor encounters at every turn. Bamberg has essentially developed into a baroque town and yet has still managed to preserve its medieval structures. 1000 years of history have made their mark on Bamberg, listed since 1993 as UNESCO World Heritage.

Eisenach or Weimar

Eisenach
Since its founding in the 12th century Eisenach has made an unmistakable mark on German culture and history. The symbol of Eisenach is Wartburg Castle. In 1999 Wartburg Castle has been placed in the list of the UNESCO World Heritage. The well-known reformer Martin Luther translated the New Testament into the German language there. With the birth of the famous musician Johann Sebastian Bach Eisenach became a city of great international importance.

Weimar
The city of Weimar can look back on more than 1100 years of history. Great names are associated with Weimar: Goethe, Schiller, Cranach, Herder, Nietzsche and the Bauhaus-artists are only a few of the prominent citizens in Weimar's history. A total of about 25 museums and memorials offer visitors exhibits of the past and present: 14 objects were listed as a part of the UNESCO World Heritage.

Dessau or Lutherstadt Wittenberg

Dessau
Dessau has a great variety of different attractions to welcome its visitors. The city has enjoyed international attention as a city of the modern age since the foundation of the Bauhaus in the 20s. The famous Bauhaus Building of Walter Gropius and the Master Houses of Kandinsky, Klee and Feininger are now included on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list. You will enjoy a walking tour along the cultural trail of Dessau, where you will see different historical buildings and memorials such as the Anhalt Art Gallery in the Georgium Palace.

Lutherstadt Wittenberg
In Wittenberg will see the Luther memorials sites and learn about the ideas of the Reformation. In 1517, when Luther published his 95 theses, Wittenberg became a city of world wide impact. In 1996, the Luther sights - Luther's house, Castle Church, Town Church, Melanchthon's house - were included on the list of the UNESCO World Heritage to keep these buildings as an authentic scene of the Reformation. In the historical printing workshop you can experience how the people of the 16th century used paper and printer's ink.

Berlin
The new Berlin presents itself to visitors as an open city again. The Brandenburg Gate - once a symbol of the divided Germany - has again become the emblem of the German capital. Around it, the new centre of Berlin is rising up, a unique urban setting in which the old joins with the new, and the future of the city becomes visible. The Berlin Museum Isle belongs to the cultural legacy of the 19th century. It represents the development of the modern design of Museums for more than one century. In 1999 this complex of buildings became a part of the UNESCO World Heritage list with its five Museums: Pergamon Museum, the Old Museum, the National Gallery, the Bode Museum and the New Museum.

Potsdam
If you prefer to relax some hours, you will have the possibility to travel to Potsdam to explore the Castle and Park of Sanssouci. This summer residence of Friedrich II of Prussia was placed on the World Heritage list by the UNESCO as an example of unique architecture and wonderful landscape.

Our journey UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE in Austria and Germany will make you acquainted with music and cultural sites and let you enjoy the traditions.
